Fresh content on your website or updating your content on the website on regular basis can have varied effects on your search engine rankings depending on various scenarios. Although as a basic thumb rule it is a good practice to signal the search engine that your website is active and is updated on a regular basis for your visitors. But it can have bad results also depending on your strategy and nature of the website. I have tried to cover all combinations to give you a holistic view so that you can define your website updating strategy to your benefit.
Updating content on Commercial Website:
For a commercial website it is important that the content is stable, while one can update content as your business model changes, but a complete revamp on the content can effect your rankings negatively unless the search engine understands that it is done for better as it can compare the page update with the earlier cache.
So the advise is that you can update your content but make sure you don’t trigger anything bad. Also to send the search engine a signal that your website is fresh use a section on the main landing page that you can update weekly or 2 times in a week.
Blog / Articles Website:
The fact is that more updates the merrier it is, if you can update your blog on a daily basis you are bound to hit Google in the right spot turning it on and you get some brownies over there.
So go ahead and use all the resources that you have to update your website as regularly as you can.
The synopsis on the article is that the content update strategy differs when it comes to a commercial website, as it is a known fact that Google / Yahoo give away results based on the intent of the visitor and some where in their database they have tagged your website as commercial or informative. So “Don’t go on a spree with updating your content as a basic practice .. PlAN IT“
